An AI subscription is worth it when it produces a measurable net benefit in a recurring workflow—not merely because the model is impressive.

    I would calculate:

monthly value of accepted work saved − subscription price − verification and switching costs.

The “accepted work” part matters. If an assistant drafts ten things but I spend more time correcting them, the subscription is not saving money or attention. A subscription is easier to justify when I use it several times a week for a task with clear output, when the included tools replace other paid services, or when usage limits and latency materially affect my work.

There is empirical evidence that AI can help in a specific setting: the NBER Generative AI at Work study found an average 14% productivity increase among customer-support agents using an assistant. But that was one field experiment and one workflow, not proof that every consumer subscription pays for itself.

I would keep a subscription if, over a month, it saves more valuable time than it costs and I can explain which tasks create that value. I would cancel when usage is occasional, the service duplicates another tool, the quality requires heavy checking, or the provider’s privacy and data-retention terms are unacceptable. A one-month baseline without the subscription is often more informative than a feature checklist.
