    There is no universally best MCP tool. The biggest daily time-saver is usually the one that removes a repetitive hand-off in a workflow you already perform: for a developer that may be repository/filesystem access, for a researcher browser/search, and for an operations team an issue tracker, database, or calendar.

    I would choose the first tool by three tests:

    • it replaces a frequent copy-and-paste step;
    • its input and output are narrow enough to be predictable;
    • its permissions are smaller than the value of the task.

    The MCP specification describes tools as model-invoked functions and emphasizes schemas, metadata, and deterministic tool ordering. That points to a useful principle: a small, well-designed tool with a clear contract is usually more valuable than a huge “do everything” tool.

    I would measure it for a week: median minutes saved, successful calls, retries, and the number of times I had to undo its work. My personal starting set would be one read-only search tool, one file or repository tool, and one narrowly scoped action tool. Add another only when a real repeated bottleneck appears.
